the nation's capital are deals. it's a place created for one thing, for elected people from across this country to come and meet, get to know each other, and find a way to direct the country. the working principle is that we the american people can send people here who can do the job to make things work, to make government of, by and for the people be just that. the movie "lincoln," especially the second half of the movie, the part about winning congressional passage of the 13th amendment to outlaw slavery is about washington doing its job. people get squeezed. they get paid off with jobs. in short, they get worked. go see "lincoln," or go back and watch "recount" and see how things work on the inside. that's "hardball" for now. thanks for being with us. choice for defense secretary. tonight a reminder of who won the election and why this is the perfect guy. let's get to work. >> chuck hagel is the leader that our troops deserve. he is an american patriot. >> president obama nominates chuck hagel as defense secretary, and conservatives are fuming. >> positions that he has taken over the years will be, i think very much a matter of discussion. >> this is an in-your-face nomination by the president. >> if hagel is nominated, it is very difficult to imagine circumstance in which i could support his confirmation. >> admiral joe sestak and richard wolffe are here on the road to confirmation and what this could mean for defense cuts. >>> republicans are coming out for the government shutdown. >> you think that's a good idea? >> yes, i do. >> you really do? >> yes. >> john nichols on their backwards reasoning. >>> mcdonnell doesn't mind another hostage situation for the deficit, at the expense of the most vulnerable. david cay johnston lays out the gop fabricated spending problem ahead. >>> the opposition on gun control reaches heated extre

mother of that child now has a strong message for our elected leaders in washington. >> 20 heartbroken families lost a child in the sandy hook school shooting. i know how much it hurts. my 9-year-old daughter was murdered in the tucson shooting. i have one question for our political leaders. when will you find the courage to stand up to the gun lobby? whose child has to die next? to every mother, we cannot wait. we have to demand a plan. go to demandaplan.org and add your name. >> the ad is part of a campaign of the group mayors against illegal guns. demand a plan has a three-step solution to reduce gun violence in america. they want a criminal background check for every gun sold in the country. a ban on assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines. and they want to make gun trafficking a federal crime, all common sense stuff. groups like demand a plan want to keep the focus on this issue as vice president joe biden and his task force hold meetings this week to create a path forward. tomorrow, wednesday, the vice president will meet with the victims groups and gun

mean, we've had i think a trend toward electing people who are more extreme in their positions on this and i dent think they represent necessarily the average parent who i think would prefer an environment where their child wasn't exposed to that kind of risk. >> vice president biden of course is working really hard at this and is meeting with a lot of groups. and speaking of federal law, would you be more comfortable if this was a federal law that would make it so that public schools could not have teachers who were armed or do you believe that should be up to the local districts? >> i think this needs to be a national consensus. i think we need a federal law on that. i don't -- i don't believe that -- if you create anomalous environments where those things are available, you have too much bleed thru, i think we need to have consistency across this. parents should feel comfortable regardless of where they live. >> rhonda, has there been any student reaction to this? what is their takeaway knowing the teachers in their schools may be secretly armed? >> well, i mean, you used the w

people do not send elected officials to washington to do this kind of harm. is this why you sent your elected official to go to washington to allow something like this to happen? and i'm asking republicans tonight. is this really what you want the country to do? look. the bottom line is this. we're at a crossroads in america. the right wing wants the big three so bad, this is the conversation they're willing to have. and this may be the direction they're willing to go to make sure that they can get the cuts they want, because they want that government cut right down into the bathtub. i'm joined tonight by msnbc contributor and "washington post" columnist e.j. dionne, and ruth conniff, political editor of the progressive magazine. great to have both of you with us tonight. e.j., you first. who would get hit the hardest? i mean, if we were not to pay our bills, who gets hit the hardest and the soonest, actually? sooner than anybody else? >> i'm glad what you did what you just did, because i think one of the problems with this debt ceiling fight is that it's such a ridiculous idea on its

filibuster meaningful. it can be done with obama's re-elected and i still have the majority. we can do it with a simple majority at the beginning of the congress. >> welcome back to "the ed show." senate majority leader harry reid promising to pass the filibuster reform at the beginning of the 113th congress. that was on my radio show back in july. well, president obama has been reelected. the democrats held on to a simple majority in the senate. so it's time. so by reid's account, the time for real reform is on january 22nd when the senate votes on the congressional sessions rule book, which is why harry reid is the most important man in american politics right now. senate republicans of the 112th congress used and abused the filibuster as a tool for the minority to prevent the will of the majority. and it's looking like the 113th congress couldn't be any different. just take a look at republican opposition to president obama's recent cabinet nominations. republican senator jeff sessions of alabama issued a statement saying that jack lew must never be secretary of the treasury. sessions
